HIGHLIGHTS

BOYS Eastern States: – US#1 St. Benedict’s NJ sr Ed Cheserek defends his title in 11:58.7, seven ticks ahead of Fay-Man NY sr Nick Ryan (12:05.7). Impressive and surprising 3rd for Lake Shore NY jr TJ Hornberger (12:20.2). Meanwhile, US#1 Christian Bros. Academy repeats and smashes team average record with 12:44.54 (old record 12:48 by F-M in 2004)! They score 94, while West Chester Henderson PA (200 pts., 13:02.08) wins a tough battle for 2nd over Don Bosco Prep NJ (207, 13:03.42), Fay-Man NY (218, 12:57.38) and Tatnall DE (220, 13:05.70).

GIRLS Eastern States: – With a 14:21.2 triumph from Reagan Anderson, US#11 Tatnall DE powers to a big upset over US#1 Fayetteville-Manlius NY, 81-90. F-M, running without #1 and defending champ Jillian Fanning, had three in the top 20, but Tatnall countered with three in the top 14. Pennsbury PA (114) and Holy Names NY (123) followed. Elk Catholic PA Kennedy Weisner was 2nd individually in 14:22.9 and Valley Central NY sr Holly Cavalluzzo 3rd in 14:37.2.

Other GIRLS Varsity: Bronxville jr Mary Cain defends her title in the “A” race in 14:03.9, the fastest girls time of the meet and 28 seconds faster than last year, leading Bronxville to the best non-Easterns average (15:26.44) of the day and a narrow 68-75 win over Warwick Valley NY and frosh Megan Reilly – whose 14:17.4 is the second best time of the meet. West Morris Mendham NJ jr MacKenzie Barry was 3rd in 14:25.5 (5th overall).

Other fast times: 14:30.2 by Clarence NY soph Marissa Saenger to win the “F” race (6th overall) and 14:31.6 by West Chester Henderson PA sr Stephanie Aldrich to win the “D” race (7th overall).

BOYS Varsity Teams: The top team averages from the other Varsity races were 13:10.20 byWarwick Valley NY in “F” (as they scored 66 to beat 133 and 13:19.38 by Rush-Henrietta), 13:17.88 by Chaminade NY in “G,” 13:19.76 by Walter Johnson MD as they rolled in “D,” and 13:21.6 by Collegiate NY that triumphed in “A.”

There were also good performances over 1.25M in the frosh races, with Colonie NY’s Jake Johnsonclocking a meet record 5:56.6 in the “Frosh D” race and CBA’s Nick Trigani running 5:58.1 in the “Frosh E” race. CBA’s 6:09.06 avg. was best of day.

Preview: LEADING STORYLINES

** BOYS Eastern States Individuals – As any fan of national prep distance running knows, US#1 and defending race (and national Foot Locker) champ Edward Cheserek, the St. Benedict’s NJ senior, is finally making his debut after foregoing several weeks of racing to prepare for SATs. US#9 Fayetteville-Manlius NY sr Nick Ryan, the top returnee from last fall’s NXN champs, is also racing for the first time. Sure, Cheserek would like to set a new CR (11:55.4 for 2.5M last year), but realistically he’s probably not that sharp and would be smart to make sure he has something left the last half-mile. So don’t expect a sub-12, but do expect Ryan to give him a good battle until close to the end. US#21 Carmel NY sr Eric Holt, off to a fast start in two races and coming off very good indoor and outdoor track seasons, is the best bet for third and perhaps a darkhorse for second.

** BOYS Eastern States Teams – The team battle will see US#1 Christian Brothers Academy NJ (Marc Bloom’s Super 25) heavily favored to defend their title. While strong programs like US#14Fayetteville-Manlius NY, NE#8 Don Bosco Prep NJ, and NE#4 Bishop Hendricken RI are in the field, it should be CBA vs. the clock. The 2004 record team average of 12:48.8, set by F-M, is in their grasp.

** GIRLS Eastern States Individuals – Like Ryan, US#9 senior Jillian Fanning is a Fayetteville-Manlius star making her season debut. Like Cheserek, she’s the defending champ. Unlike last year, when there were runners like Haley Pierce and Brianna Nerud in the field, Fanning might not be pushed too hard. It would take a supremely shocking performance from the likes of Elk Catholic PA’sKennedy Weisner or one of Fanning’s teammates to prevent a repeat.

** GIRLS Eastern States Teams – The six-time national champ and US#1 Fay-Man girls are not likely to be seriously challenged, even with the presence of US#8 Holy Names NY, #11 Tatnall DE and #21 Pennsbury PA. It will be interesting to see how close they come and if Holy Names’ Estela Smith, the transfer from Saratoga Springs, gets closer to top form than she’s been. Last year’s runner-up, Tatnall, is still strong – but not the national top-three powerhouse it was with Pierce.

** Other Races, Girls: The Girls Varsity “A” race will be the most closely watched, with US#5 Bronxville NY jr Mary Cain leading the way. She was fourth overall last year; can she close the gap between herself and Eastern States favorite Fanning? Similarly, in Girls Varsity “E,” West Genesee jrLaura Leff, third at Foot Locker Finals in 2011, continues her road back from injury. Team-wise, NY#4 Bronxville is probably the best squad not in the Eastern States.

** Other Races, Boys: Marcellus NY’s Ryan Manahan could be one of the top 2-3 in New York by season’s end and, as the “E” race fave is the best outside of the Easterns. A good team battle looms between NE#9 Lowell MA and NY#8 Rush-Henrietta NY in the “F” race.
